block it in your hosts file (add a line to your hosts file that says:
127.0.0.1 www.badsite.com
Then save the changes to the file and it should block that site (do it for all sites. .
Or you could google Mike's Hosts File and download and install it and it will block lots of sites (including lots of adserver sites (so you don't see ads on every webpage you go do). .
A better solution and one that blocks a lot more sites is the one below:
Here is another link with a hosts file that completely explains how to block sites (either tons of bad sites altogether, or individual sites (like maybe what you want to do), specific sites. .

That takes experience. Unfortunately the only way to gain experience is ... well ... through experience.Im making a site, I need advice to making it seem more professional?
I'm a very UN-professional game maker, (I make flash like games and I wanna build a website to put them in.

It has hundreds of free layouts for you to use, made my experiences developers. They're linkware, which means they're free, but you have to leave something small at the bottom of the page crediting them. It's barely noticeable, though, and most developers make it almost blend in with the background so it doesn't stand out. It's a good way for the non-experienced developer to get a professional look

Please someone can advice facebook proxy site which allows chat option?
Proxies are really not very good at all and they get blocked all the time as you probably know. Plus they have issues with many web site features that make them useless.
The number of proxies run by hackers is also growing daily and you risk your computer and more using one that claims to be anonymous. Plus they are easy to break and leak information.
The only proxy I've found to be somewhat useful because it changes IP's daily is http://www.personalvpn.biz. It is a limited proxy and only works with a few sites. But it seems to work most times and is safe to use.
The better approach is the Personal VPN which unblocks web sites, encrypts your entire connection for security, and doesn't get blocked daily. Plus it works on all web sites and all applications including flash. http://www.surfbouncer.com. Or you can email them at unblock@surfbouncer.comPlease someone can advice facebook proxy site which allows chat option?

I am building a website where the information will acruired from US government and other non-profit organizations like Red Cross. The website will be run by me(individual) and I will not responsible for false information. I am just gathering information on my site. What advice do you give about forming corporation, LLC, PPC or anything to be safe about getting sued? How would the copyright law waould work?Building a website where information on the site will be from another autors. like articles. What advice?
Do you expect to make money from this venture? (Frankly, I don't see how.)
But it you do, you better consult with a copyright lawyer first.

Why has Y/A morphed into a love advice site?
No, people I think find it easier to find other people with the same problems and find people that they can finally talk to about things that they are afraid to share with people in real life. For me it is easier sharing my feelings with people that have had experiences that I am going through or went through simply because they can understand. You on the other hand must be so perfect where nothing goes wrong in your life where you don't need anyone else. Some of us aren't emotionally strong with people like you.Why has Y/A morphed into a love advice site?

How reliable is this Web Site for information and advice?
Usually you can find one or two answers to your question that are credible, the rest are just a bunch of wise asses, though they are often entertaining. How reliable is this Web Site for information and advice?
Well, usually there are a few people who try to be punny and funny, but they just aren't. Some people just make awful remarks, but usually you will find some very good answers. You can always look for my answers, they are very good. LOLHow reliable is this Web Site for information and advice?
Depends on what type of information and advice you are looking for. If you ask a question regarding a serious subject most people tend to pick up on it and try to answer it. However be prepared for an assortment of responses, some serious, some funny and a couple of nasty ones thrown in for good measure.
A lot also depends on how the question is asked. It the question is too short and no details are given, then it is almost hopeless. The person asking the question needs to direct the responses to the area that he/she is looking for.
The best way for you to determine the reliability of this site is to scan some of the questions and answers. Only you can determine if it is what you are looking for.

Need advice or a good diagnosis site to check on back problems for Collies?
I had to put my Collie to sleep last week as she started to suffer with her back, first signs were being unable to stand properly on her hind legs, the problem got progressivley worse and in 3 days she could not stand, all she could do was drag herself around on her bum, I could not afford the costs of an MRI scan which our vet said was the only other thing to have had done as she had no feelings in her feet after the vet did a forcep test on her paws. Because of this there was no option but to have her put to sleep.
Does anybody know of any sites that I could look through to find what could have been the cause of this problem? since having her put down I have had a few people tell me that they know of other dog owners who have had similar problems with their dogs but no diagnossis.Need advice or a good diagnosis site to check on back problems for Collies?
Kinda suprise the vet could not give you a idea.. based on my experience as a vet tech,, I am not making a offical diagnosis but, comparing similar cases..Disk diease in dogs.. would be my first thought..
http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content鈥?/a>
yes, this would require a MRI to confirm and surgery to correct/remove the pressure on the disk if medical managment was not working,, both are costly unfortunaly..
also dog can have tumors in the spine,, possible with your dog..also needing diagnosis by MRI ..again possibly needing surgery..
The end result,, the cases that need surgery do not respond to medical treatement.. So rest assured even though you could not afford the MRI to specifically diagnose your dog, and may not know excatly what when wrong with dogs back.. if your dog did not respond to medical treatment the only option would have been MRI to find the excact location of the problem, and surgery to fix it,, both very expensive.. and honestly does not always work.. it is also a very aggressive form of treatment on a older pet,, and a lot to put the dog though..and not the right option for every client..
you did the best you could,, don't feel too upset sometimes all though we would love to spend every penny possible,, there is a big diffrence in not being able to swing $800-$1500 for a MRI and another similar amount for surgery and not being able to afford routien care, vaccinations or even a medical and emergency exam when ones pet is sick.. you where responsibe in having the dog seen, treated,, and making the painfull decision you did..

First can i say i am really sorry to hear about your dog.
I had my collie at the vets on friday , he has similar symptoms. He has told me my dog has arthritis in his back legs.
I had a labrador a few years ago he had the same problem , he couldn't stand and i had to have him put to sleep , probably the worst thing i have had to do in my life.
If anyone does know any sites i would be most grateful to hear of them also

Anyone now how to create your own internet advice site?
First off, get yourself a REAL hosted website, not some free geocities crap.
here's a shortened link to a company that has a real good deal
http://laforge.notlong.com/
they charge $94.80 for 2 years prepaid, and that comes with a free domain name (which is a $20+ value)
After you have that, use their 'site studio' software to design an opening page (Because you'll want the advice section to be easy to update, so I recommend using a blog or a forum for the actual advice column)
But you can use the static, template done pages as a place to generate leads, a faq, photo gallery, etc.

you can design your own site simply on geocities.com its run by yahoo
here's a shortened link to a company that has a real good deal
http://laforge.notlong.com/
they charge $94.80 for 2 years prepaid, and that comes with a free domain name (which is a $20+ value)
After you have that, use their 'site studio' software to design an opening page (Because you'll want the advice section to be easy to update, so I recommend using a blog or a forum for the actual advice column)
But you can use the static, template done pages as a place to generate leads, a faq, photo gallery, etc.

Please make sure to alert people that each case is different and you aren't a cure. The best advice should come from a knowledgable person (vet, trainer, etc.) in their area, that knows the horse and circumstances.

Can you advice me any good site to check for plagiarism in a scholl project?
Copy and paste, in quotes, some of the words you believe might be plagarized into the Google search box. If they stole it off the Internet, that will probably find it.
Last sememster I caught people in every group project cheating. So did the professor. Two were expelled and the others are on academic probation. Their bad choices will follow them forever.

Where is a good site to learn about organising a car boot sale, or can you give advice?
http://www.carbootjunction.com/search-by鈥?/a> try that ,
this site wont actually teach you, but i do belive it will help, i keep a stall at Battersea Boot. Good luck and anything i can help feel free to Email meWhere is a good site to learn about organising a car boot sale, or can you give advice?
I am not sure by your wording if you mean you are organising a car boot sale for other people to come and sell at or if you are going to a boot sale and selling items yourself.
If you are organising a car boot sale for others to sell items, your best place to start finding things out would be the local council. There are likely all types of regulations, including traffic policing, that you will need to discover and arrange.
If you are going to a pre-organised car boot sale and selling your own items, one piece of advice is to take plenty of change. You would be surprised at how people try to talk you into letting things go cheaper than you want as they don't have quite the right money and don't want to split a note.
Also, don't let yourself be haggled down by the first person that shows an interest in an item. If you think it worth the price, don't budge. They will come back if they really want it and this is often a tactic used to get things more cheaply. Judge your decision by the time left to the car boot sale closing and whether you are prepared to take the item home again if it does not sell.
Get to the bootsale when it opens to sellers... this is usually very early and often before dawn in winter! If selling then, remember to take a torch to help you set up.
Plus, in light of our weather, make sure you wrap things that could be damaged by rain in plastic food bags with the price clearly marked on them.
Ensure all items are clean. Wipe any dust, sticky marks or stains off items where you can as these can put people off buying.
Also, remember to take a flask of coffee and something to eat. Try to go with a friend or family member. The site I used had toilets and, if caught short, you don't want to leave your items unattended. It can be a long and sometimes disheartening day, but good luck!Where is a good site to learn about organising a car boot sale, or can you give advice?
A tip I can give you is eg If you want to sell something at 拢1, mark it up for 拢2. Then you can knockdown on your prices and purchaser thinks they are getting a deal and you are actually getting what you want for item.
First set aside whatever you want to sell and mark a price on it as you do it. Then organize everything into categories i.e. books, clothes, nick-knacks, etc. If you have more than will fit in your boot, you'll want to get some tables to lay stuff out. Also, make sure you have plenty of change.
yeah you charge cars so much, say 拢10 to come and park.
That's all there is to it, it's not that complicated.

Should we amateurs attempt to give advice to nutters on this site?
eg ';I'm going to jump off a bridge, which bridge is best for this sort of thing?';Should we amateurs attempt to give advice to nutters on this site?
No. The only advice in this situation would be to refer them to a mental health professional or a very helpful website.Should we amateurs attempt to give advice to nutters on this site?
I don't like the expression ';nutters';, but I think when people ask questions they know they are going to get a range of answers. There's nothing wrong with a bit of common sense.
However people with personality disorders are good at attracting attention to their difficulties and at finding people who may be able to help. They are not always as good at using that help. So on here lots of people with personality disorders ask for and get advice, but because they can't use that advice they ask again. They get temporary relief from the involvement of other people but it doesn't change anything. They also tend to tell what sounds to me like half the story, and their behaviour is then reinforced by caring well-meaning people on this site who give advice and support instead of encouraging them to take responsibility for their actions. However, I don't believe it causes them more problems, and I think it gives some short-term support.
It may be interesting to know whether anyone has ever regretted giving out their email address to someone on here who sounded in need of help.
LOL, no you shouldn't advise them on the best type of bridge lol! That said, a listening ear or a new perspective is sometimes all someone needs to get through what they're going through. Not everyone posting here is a nut btw... mental illness is just that, an illness. Sometimes treatable, sometimes not, but always something that the person is suffering from. The anonymity of this group allows us (yes us, as I suffer from depression myself) to discuss our issues and gain perspective and awareness, and sometimes avert crisis. The question ';which type of bridge is best to jump off of?'; generally means, ';I am considering suicide and KNOW I should be talking to someone, but there's no one around and I need to talk. So we talk. Sometimes it helps.
I think you should give them advice but not how to commit suicide, you should give advice on how to seek treatment as they are clearly distressed and need some help.
As for calling them nutters, maybe show some kindness, they are going through a tough time and are probably feeling very unloved and the last thing the want is to be called a nutter.
no you should not be giving advise to people you are calling nutters....that alone shows that you do not underrstand their situation and is insulting. However many people do find help with situations from people that do understand and/or have been there, even though they are not profesionals.
nooooo dont ever say to anyone kill yourself cause some people might do it ...there was a guy on a programme called paltalk before and he had few issues ect...and the full room was saying to him ';oh just hang urself on cam life ect';'; so he went ahead and killed himself on cam while ppl watched hopelessly..now they have to live with the fact tht they egged him on
no , but then people shouldn't really be asking serious questions here either,
but its fun, and hopefully people have other things in there life's other than the internet.

Imagine FaceBook, but the only thing you can do is update your status
Yeah, I don't get it either.

i'm fifty will i do?????....... it's simple their main and only question. is ';what are you doing'; and people sign up and report in regularly to say where they are and what they are doing.......and other people check in to read their reports and become a follower of them who are turning in the reports. and the guy who is turning in the reports may be following other people as well...............so some people are being followed. and others are following............etc.
Yeah I signed up too and felt stupid because all
I saw was this dumb little box for you to update what you're doing. You can't even write a lot there! It's a total waste of time and I don't know what the hype is about.

Do you ever actually take the advice that you get on this site?
i dont. it doesnt really matter what people say, im still going to do what i was planning on doing before. and for example if ask whether or not i should do something, and people say no, i go ahead and do it. am i the only one like this?!?!Do you ever actually take the advice that you get on this site?
Rarely, if ever. At 60, I very seldom listen to another person's opinion, but then again, I didn't listen very well at 14, either.
I can respect their opinion, I just don't choose to follow it.Do you ever actually take the advice that you get on this site?
Whether it is advice from on Y!A or in the real world it needs to be evaluated. I usually don't get advice on here since I mostly answer questions or ask poll type questions.
However, it is best to look for advice from a trusted source. I seek advice from people I know and am close to such as my parents and other family members. I also look to the bible as a primary source of guidance.
You have to determine what your will accept as valid advice or bad advice. Most of the advice on here could be garbage (and likely is) but there may be some piece of advice on Y!A that is worthwhile.
Actually, some of the advice I have been given on here really helped me. It was a long time ago on this one question I posted.
Whats the point on you posting a question then asking for advice, if you know you're not gonna take it on beforehand?
well if u dont want to tak advice from people on this site then dont post your questions!!! i personally do tak it because i dont want to talk to anyone about it in person. and theres alot more people to get advice from on this site.
Sometimes if I think it's a good idea. I took the advice on how to get my car door to shut that time. Someone actually told me what was wrong that was keeping it from shutting and and I fixed it.
Yeah, sometimes. Esp with parenting ?s because sometimes other parents have a different perspective and then I change my mind.
Sometimes. It really depends on my question.
sometimes
I often take the advice. I mean, why ask a question if you don't care about the answer?
sometimes, it just all depends!

Need some financial advice on this site?
Hey Guys, Site im about to post seems to be a little good to be true. Was hoping someone with sound financial knowledge could have a browse and tell me if there is a catch or whatever?
Thanks in advance.. Link: http://www.investimet.net/Need some financial advice on this site?
congratulations, you have just stumbled upon a ponzi scheme. It is a small, less complex version of what Bernie Madoff was running. The most obvious way to see this is their promised returns are not possible. The only way to get close to this (about 2% a day) is to be an overnight lender, and only massive banks can do this. The second sign is that they lack a member area, claiming that someone [other than them!] could steal your money if they had one.
Here's how a ponzi scheme works, step by step:
1) people find the site and ';invest'; their money, since they can't see it and ';know'; they are getting income from it they leave it alone.
2) if anyone wants to withdraw their money they are paid with money from later ';investors';
3) the person running this scam takes most of the payments out and uses themNeed some financial advice on this site?
I think it lacks professionalism and I wouldn't invest with them myself. It's selling a terrible sales pitch which lacks all credibility and selling something that is far-fetched. If they don't have a profile of the people who works in the company, then I wouldn't be too keen to contact them.
However, whether this company is legitimate and whether it does have a proven track is another matter. I would check the existance of this company with the inland revenue if you are seriously considering them. I would also request references from them and check up on those references. I would check their financial statements and have it gone through with independent auditors and accountants. I would also look through examples of their past successes and what sort of shares their portfolio consists of. I will then look into those shares - the companies, their industry, their financial situation and possibility of prosperity. I will check with the investment company's financial history and its policies to see if they are aligned with the law and are promising.
An investment company that tells people that it never fails is lying. A good company knows when to stop an investment from getting too large or when things look for the worse. They will know when to weigh up their options and work on percentages. They will be able to spot promising companies and be able to be honest about their mistakes.
Hope this helps

Do you worry that children asking questions on this site are getting really, really bad advice?
I've only been doing this for about two weeks and the horrendous advice and answers I see make me crazy. If my kids went here for advice instead of to me I would be really worried about the outcome.Do you worry that children asking questions on this site are getting really, really bad advice?
Yes, some children are getting bad advice. Partly due to people immediately answering a question, without checking the profile or age of the asker. When I began on this site, it didn't occur to me that a huge amount of the visitors to this site are minors. So if someone asks....I think he likes me, but he's 10 years older than I am...should I go for it. If I say YES ,and that person turns out to be 10 years old....there's a serious case of bad advice. So, instead of trying to beat others to the punch, (or punchline)....it doesn't hurt to take a few extra seconds to try and ascertain the seriousness of the questions being asked.Do you worry that children asking questions on this site are getting really, really bad advice?
Not everyone puts information in their profile, though.
In a perfect world, the parent/child relationships would be strong enough so the kids would feel comfortable discussing with their parents any and all concerns. This isn't a perfect world, though, and there are many kids in dysfunctional homes so the advice they get here is probably better than what they would receive at home. Schools should also stress their open door policies with counselors and nurses so kids don't feel desperate or isolated if they are having a problem.
I think most of the advise is really good. My daughter sought advice over an abortion. She didn't want to listen to us. Her partner wanted it [ the abortion ] and she didn't want to loose him over it. We told her to get rid of him, not the baby, but would she listen ? Many people on here reinforced what we said, and one guy in particular told her partner to ' man up'. He did, and our much wanted grandchild is due in a few weeks. I don't think my daughter would have gone through with it, but thank god for this site, i say
lol no depends on how old the person is asking the question... and if he or she askes like a really stupid question than some people are gonna give bad advice just to be funny but then theres also people who do answer it though
I think probably most of the people that use this are infact young kids. And yes, I do believe that they are getting terrible advice from people. Most kids seem to use this to ask their questions because in most that I have seen they express that they feel as if they cannot talk to a parent or anyone else. Then they either get really bad advice from kids their own age or younger who know nothing about what they are asking, or they get bad advice from adults who are trying to be smartasses.
Depends on what the questons are about
some answers of people are serious.
I only stick to the pregnant questions, because i think itws a very serious topic.
well dad i think ur crazy cause i follow this advice.
I give children children really really bad advice only when they ask really really stupid questions, even for thier age.

Would you consider it ethically dubious for doctors to give medical 'advice' on a site such as this?
And by giving advice do they meet the criteria for good practice as specified in the attached link
http://www.gmc-uk.org/guidance/good_medical_practice/duties_of_a_doctor.asp
What are your views?Would you consider it ethically dubious for doctors to give medical 'advice' on a site such as this?
I think it is poor practice, as you only get a limited bit of info, and your answer could sway someone's decision. I've only seen it done once or twice. I limit my answers to just giving out information and the only real advice I give is for the questioner to discuss the options with their doctor.Would you consider it ethically dubious for doctors to give medical 'advice' on a site such as this?
I'm a medical student and I don't think there is anything ethically dubious about doctors giving advice on here. Considering they actually know what they are talking about compared to the thousands of absolute morons who are answering most of the questions on here. I find the people who are claiming to have knowledge about things they don't, ethically dubious.
Giving advice doesn't contradict any of the criteria for good medical practice. Its not even practicing medicine.
There is no harm and it is perfectly acceptable to give advice. You can't diagnose someone over the internet, but I haven't seen anyone do that.
In the interest of ethics, no practicing physician would share any medical instruction or advice that would in any way harm or cause the 'patient' to draw any conclusion that would be detrimental to health and well being. That goes for the person seeking advice or anyone reading the answer. Most physicians would give a generalized overview of what you are experiencing, and advise you to actually visit a doctor. They may also provide advice in how to help the doctor to better understand what you are experiencing and better find a course of action to help you.
Medical advice 鈮?medical practice.
So no a doctor does not meet the criteria for good practice, becausing they are not practicing medicine. The point of Yahoo Answers is to get/give lay advice on a range of issues. If someone with actual knowledge and education in that area provides them with information, it isn't ethically unsound. I haven't seen any medical professional on this site try to claim that YA is a substitute for physically visiting a doctor.
Do you think there are any genuine doctors on this site. I think there is possibly one. I doubt any doctor would waste his time giving advice in this random way.
How do we know that any of the questions are genuine or contain all the relevant information.
I am not a doctor but I have a great deal of experience in health work and unless the question is obvious or generalised I refer the questioner to their own doctor. I don't consider that irresponsible.
Would you consider it ethically dubious if a policeman made an arrest outside of his shift? Or if a lawyer offered legal advise on this site?
This is not a place to practice medicine, and more likely than not, my advise is to arrange an appointment with a GP. However, if that's ethically dubious, then I might just have to stop.
Plus, there are a few doctors on here. Most of the time not answering questions (I can only ever find time to answer a few at a time), but we do exist.
In the grand scheme of things, it's not ethically questionable. Mainly due to the fact that we can't practice medicine over the internet.
Michaelangeliron, there are several very competent physicians on YA- Pangolin is one of them. They do not give specific advice, except to see their own doctor soon, now, or eventually. Usually we just tell them where to look to find the information they seek.
We do not practice Medicine on the Internet.
If you hang around here enough, you'll see that much of the good advice given by the physicians here amounts to ';see your physician';.
This forum is designed to answer questions, not give medical advice or practice medicine. There is no doctor-patient relationship.
Generally, no, it is not ethically dubious. The potential exists, but I cannot recall a situation where a physician in this forum has crossed the line. Most MDs attempt to clarify the questioner's situation, often with the advice ';see your doctor!';
No, because I believe people who try to get free medical advice from here are VERY stupid if they take it seriously. And considering that doctors are meant to be well educated they should be giving no more than pointers with advice to seek further help.
most advice I have seen is just there to calm people who are worried and they nearly always say ';see your doctor';. If someone said something like ';take 2 paracetamol every hour'; then yes, this would be irresponsible.

Why Are People Asking For Health Advice On This Site?
Let me clarify: I suppose it's alright to ask about homeopathic medicines and stuff like that but, questions like,';I dropped my 3 month old on her head last night when I put her to bed and she still hasn't woke up. Is there a problem, or should I do that every night since she seems to sleep the whole night through? That way I can go out with my friends and not have to pay a babysitter!';
I get it that some people don't have medical insurance and may need advice. But some of these questions I've been seeing are hinting at some serious conditions. I guess my real question should be,';what are these people thinking?';Why Are People Asking For Health Advice On This Site?
I think you have to take some of these questions with a grain of salt. Some people ask outrageous questions, because they like the attention and like to stir the pot. They sit back and laugh at everyone who jumps on their questions with indignant concern. Don't believe everything you read here.
There are some people who have no clue about their health as well. Or simply don't care.
I always say ';see your doctor'; on any health question I answer. I'm an RN and want to see everyone as healthy as possible. I rarely treat any question as ';made up';. Because you never really know.
Most people that pose questions on this or any other website should be asking their doctors anyway. This site is purely entertainment. Why Are People Asking For Health Advice On This Site?
Unfortunately the world is full of stupid people. Due to this fact you're bound to run into a few on the Internets....
I think some are just stupid, some are just looking for attention but it makes me wonder how they expect half the world to come up with a sensible answer.
there is no telling!
but think about it, anyone with a computer with internet access can ask a question here. they don't test you intelligence when you sign up.
Because one of their favorite phrases of all time is : ';Hey ya'll, watch this!';
Yeah, at least check out WebMD first!
I think that people have become attached to their yahoo answers community, as if they were a group of concerned friends, and would value their opinions over those of a certified medical professional. Still, it isn't a good idea.
I've wondered this as well, there are some people who are like';my kid is barfing their brains out and going into a coma,'; but wait i'd better ask a pile of strangers on a computer what they think it is, go figure!!!!!!
Someone has their head screwed on properly....couldn't agree with you more. I'm glad Yahoo! has a disclaimer.
People, when in doubt, go to the doctor! What is more important? Your money or your health?

How sad is it that humans resort to an internet site for advice because talking to our neighbor is...?
politically incorrect? Doesn't it seem like people have become so ';perfect'; that we are no longer able to just be honest and real about life's problems? I love this site and I love all your input, but how sad that I feel more comfortable talking to you than to others. How sad is it that humans resort to an internet site for advice because talking to our neighbor is...?
I don't think it's sad at all.
If I have some very random question, that's very specific, one person may not have the answer. Therefore, I haven't satisfied my need. By using the internet, I'm connected to thousands, if not millions, of neighbors who can share their thoughts and experiences about something that I'm wanting to know more about.
I still talk to my neighbors, and I still talk to my family. And many times I will talk with my family about some private matters. But, once again, if they don't have a quality response (which none of us can have for every topic), then the internet is our new ';encyclopedia'; that we can go to for more information.
When people use the internet as their primary mode of communication, that's when it becomes ';sad.'; I have no problem with people who email, chat, etc., but when you would rather sit for hours and talk to strangers as opposed to go out, enjoy fresh air and hang out with your ';physical'; friends, you need help. How sad is it that humans resort to an internet site for advice because talking to our neighbor is...?
I don't have neighbors (well I have my mother in law if that counts as a neighbor). But the only questions I have asked are ';What's the name of this song? and Who is going to watch a certain TV show?';. I think it is cool that you can get help from others that have had the same or similar experience.
some people just feel more comfy talking to people that they are not looking at if that makes sense
I wasn't aware that talking to my neighbors was pc. I have a
nodding acquaintances with my neighbors. I feel people have stopped talking to there neighbors because you don't know what kind of sociopath is living next door to you. As long as my neighbors keep their noise to themselves I get along just fine.
I do, however; talk with my co-workers all the time.
One thing I know about the WWW is that it's as much a curse as a blessing.
Involvement in a forum like this one allows us some anonimity, and for many that may be more comfortable than any face to face encounter.
Here we can ask questions, and there are many valid ones that come up,,, as well as answer questions,,,most often in a valid, respectful way. We can dismiss that which goes against what we believe, or know, or want to know, that isn't being regarded,,,more impersonally than facing someone of different opinions and opposite views.
To debate someone face to face need not be a battle if we learn to accept that others may have opposing viewpoints to ours, and have tolerance for that situation. Once we GET IT, that not all are of the same mind, we can relate better to everyone.
Example: One is Catholic, One is Muslim. That doesn't have to be a battle ground, but certainly can be an educational warehouse, opened for increasing awareness, and understanding.
Rev. Steven
it is the nature of our being to let ourselves share with strangers because then we need not fear the repercussions should we share something about ourselves that may not be acceptable in our local society
Unfortunately, we have become fairly isolated as a society. Many people might not feel comfortable talking about their problems with acquaintances or neighbors because they might fear that their problems would be talked about with others. This forum is a lot like the advice columns in newspapers (i.e., Ann Landers) and people probably like the anonymity of this kind of forum. However, I do agree with you that people don't seem to have people within their own lives to communicate to.
You are right. People don't talk as much as they used to. I think because we don't have as much time as before. The time we do have we like to spend at home, hence on the computer. I don't even like to chat on the phone as much as I used to. This seems somehow better...? I think that it is because we are over-worked and over-tired. Of course the fact that we are in a technically oriented era helps. That is where we have been heading for a long time. To this. After this it will change and become something else.
Think about it this way. There are billions of people on the Earth. Of those maybe what 100 live close enough to throw a rock at? If your in a huge apt complex maybe 2,000?
You work with a group of how many people? How many do you have time at work to honestly get to know? Most people it's maybe 4 to 10. Some far less.
On the Internet you have probably close to a billion people now that you could meet. Maybe it's only 700,000 but after around 200,000 your spitting hairs until you get into the billions. Even still you cannot possibly meet everyone on the internet, or can you?
In a way you can. If everybody on the Internet got to read just one of your better answers or questions. Of those if hundreds found a common spark with who you were or if just ONE did, but it turned out to be the best friend you ever had. Is that truely sad?
The key point is that on the Net you can meet a wider diversity of people. You and they are stripped of the social and economic trappings that often keep people apart. So you get to meet the real person if they are honest online. If they are not then you didn't want to meet them anyways eh. I've made probably a dozen friends in the less than six months I've been on YA. Made lots more in different internet activities. I have no trouble making friends in RL however in RL I don't get to make friends with people in the UK, Australia, Germany, Russia, etc. In RL we are just people with more in common than the rest of the people in whatever gathering. The obscure edges are never matched though. If you have an arcane interest the odds of somebody you know in RL having the same interest are minimal. On the net there are others. No matter how rare the interest there's somebody else who shares it and it is very possible to find them on the net.
So I don't think it's sad at all.
I agree with you if your reason is to avoid face-to-face human contact or if you have friends and neighbors who are overly sensitive about being PC. That is sad. But also, perhaps that is why some feel more comfortable in anonymity.
But I think the virtue of asking questions online is that you get access to a much wider range of answers. Whatever troubles you, chances are there's someone out there who's already gone through it.
I think maybe it's ';safer';. I don't even become real honest with my closest friends anymore. There's too much room for gossip within people you know. Even though they claim it's because they ';care';, it's all crap, most people love to spread **** and analyze. Here I can ask to be analyzed when I want and ask advice, but it's safe asking because no one here can hurt me like a close friend or neighbor can. There are really no trust issues here so you can't be let down. Plus, you get total honesty, not what people think you want to hear.
Communication is a two-way process. This is not being done directly as you have rightly referred. Should be happy, at least, people are ready to share their wisdom thorugh internet.
VR
Well , I believe that the main point comes from the EYES .. lots of people feel very comfort when there are No eyes in the place in which they are .. so they act freely , and they just becom their own selves .. I agree with you also , that other some of people loves to talk in clearness , and face to face , and I wish yahoo , can make it soon , but I doupt it , cause the main idea OF THE INTERNET COMES FROM THE HIDDEN PART OF LIFE ...
And, to bring it one step farther, why not ask family? I know in some instances, some may not have the expertise to answer, and of course we can't ask advice of those who are the problem!
Yep. Pretty sad.
I do not feel it is sad at all. I would not ask my neighbor for anything becuase they are not nice people. You can get a lot of differnet views online.
It is sad that people strive to show they're ';perfect';, but I can see the good too. Online it's a bigger world, you might get more different opinions from different nationalities. I have a problem finding likeminded people especially in such small places.
Also because it might be easier not having to stand face to face with someone who might put you down, judge you or something. It can be easier online, which can also lead to you not getting trained facing people in real life.
Online it's often quicker, simpler, you don't take it as serious, it's just less trouble. + You get to stay anonymous so you can ask all the embarrassing things you want!
Not sad at all. I still talk to mu neighbors, but sometimes it's easier to ask someone random at 2:00 am than to call a neighbor then. People have crunched days and it's not always the same schedule as others'
I don't think we have become ';so perfect at all - I don't know any of my neighbors. We've never had a relationship anyway except for maybe a hello or a nod and I like it better that way.
Some of the questions I ask have already been posed to friends and family, but with no luck. Others, I would like an answer NOW, and I know I can get one here. Also, it's interesting to see a wide range of topics and to know that this forum spans the world. I realize, too, that anyone on here is open to questions, since they are here. Whereas, my neighbor might be offended or not have the time. It's just a really good additional outlet!
I don't talk to any of my neighbors about anything. I've only spoke to my closest neighbor, which is across a field from me, a couple of times. I keep to myself and they keep to their self. Just the way I like it.
I don't think it's sad at all.

How much stupid, concerning, or even downright dangerous advice have you seen on this site? ?
And worse still, how much of it was given a thumbs up?How much stupid, concerning, or even downright dangerous advice have you seen on this site? ?
To prevent viewing stupid advice, I recommend that you turn of your firewall and anti-virus. This will make your computer run very slowly from adware, trojans, and viruses. You will be too irritated by your computer's performance to view stupid advice here on Y!A If that doesn't work, you could always get a bat and do your computer in.
I hope this was helpfulHow much stupid, concerning, or even downright dangerous advice have you seen on this site? ?
I am mortified by what people recommend feeding their pets. Too many people here think Iams, Science diet and Purina etc are great pet foods. Ack!

Do the people on this site take the advice they are given?
Different people on this site ask questions and get advice from the people who are willing to give them the advice. Alot of people really are having problems. Do they actually take the advice that they are given?Do the people on this site take the advice they are given?
I am not sure! I do know that I always try my very best to put it in writing to do my best work and research, to try and help anyone that may need a friend or some good advice:) There are so many that just put down a answer without any real work or thought put into it. I do go and look up links to provide to each and every question and answer I give a response to. I really try my best to do the work and provide any one with some comfort and good advice:) It is not always the best of advice, which a person might want or be seeking at the time; I try and show respect and honesty with each one question and answer. I must say that each one person and answer is unique to the one person either asking the question or the person giving the answer. That is what makes this is site a valuable source of vast information:)
I hope this helps with your answer:)
You have a wonderful day:):)
Thanks
Rags37:):)Do the people on this site take the advice they are given?
some do and some dont, but I do.good advice is always worth taking
I think the people who are truly looking for advice take what is said to heart but others only hear what they want to.
i think if they ask a question they should be open to the answers and lets face it there are usually a range of answers because everyone has a different opinion.
maybe this is their only outlet to the world around them, and they see us as their friends.

I feel like I need to connect to other writers. Is there a good site for critiquing and writing advice?
Absolute Write Water Cooler is good. The site is free, but they do ask you to contribute to its maintenance if you can. Pax - C
