Need advice for my friend who is an identity theft victim caused by his on-site apartment manager.?

Hi,

A friend of mine needs some advice on how to deal with a horrible situation that he's facing.

His previous on-site apartment manager got into his apartment while he was not home and stole his credit cards, checks, and most importantly his and his whole family's personal information such as social security #, driver licence #, tax return info, etc. There are numerous fraudulent charges on his accounts and he has filed a police report and established a fraud alert. He's been suffering a lot of stress and has lots of concerns about his and his whole family future financial records.

He has 3 questions:

1. How can he and his family prevent future frauds besides putting fraud alerts?

2. How can he protect his personal safety?

3. Should he pursue legal actions against the apartment? (His previous on-site apartment manager was hired by the apartment and was employed at the time he committed the crime) If so, any pointers/referrals on how he can do that?

Thanks a lot!Need advice for my friend who is an identity theft victim caused by his on-site apartment manager.?
He should file a police report. He should follow up the police report with the DA or State Attorney to file charges. Then, he should pursue civil litigation against the Apartment Manager and the Management Company.Need advice for my friend who is an identity theft victim caused by his on-site apartment manager.?
Maybe change all bank accounts and get all new credit cards ? pay off anything old in full and keep documentation and then transfer balance to new cards if necessary. i'd use new companies / new card numbers .

i would consider buying some lockable box for future to keep personal papers or placing them in a banks safety security box. also dispose of papers with sensitive information properly. you should shred them. after you shred them , put something messy that you are disposing on them and place them in the garbage the day that that collector is coming for them. our company pays a special document pick up service to dispose of our company waste. i wish i could afford this. there are idiots who put the shredded papers together.

Personal safety. I don't think his personal safety is being threatened. I would proceed / be as careful as I normally am with matters of safety. I think this is someone that is threatening your financial resources that you are trying to protect.

yes, you should be sure you document what happened with police / let them investigate and go through the court procedures. you should also write a letter to the owner of the company and let them know your suspect their employee has tried to steal your identity. i would attach copies of the police reports, incident reports, etc. the company might take action / fire the guy for lack of trust or lay him off . they may have their own investigation. it might be a case of a relative is the apartment manager and nothing is going to happen.

it is a nightmare to straighten these identity matters out. i would really push my police for a thorough investigation of the matter.
One thing he can do is contact the social security administration and see about getting a new ssn. That may help get him past future problems.

Personal safety-wise, good locks and unlisted phone numbers.

Relative to suing, he may have a case, but the only way to know for sure is to see a good lawyer.
