Not here - You get what you pay for. Except for maybe jail house lawyers.
All an attorney really has to market is their ';time and advice';. Many states require attorneys to carry insurance for when that advice doesn't work. No attorney that I know will offer free legal advice.
Because one of four things happen:
1) people don't like the advice and ignore it making it a waste of time.
2) people like the advice and follow it and if things go wrong they scream the lawyers name blaming them
3) they hate the advice and cop an attitude
4) they already have advice from a couple of other lawyers and are opinion shopping (until they get the opinion they like) of course then they run with that new opinion and go back to the other lawyers claiming ';Well so and so lawyer told me you were wrong';
In any of those scenarios, the lawyer loses.
Don't get me wrong, these days people get law degrees to help people because heaven knows there is no money in being an attorney. But that desire to help is quashed soon by fighting with every one all the time about everything (opposing party, district attorney, their own clients.... who else is there?)
It is like being a boxer. You always take punches when you enter the ring. Many a lawyer would hesitate to step into a fight risking their license and losing (getting beaten up). Coupled with the fact that the client asking doesn't care enough to invest anything into their own case, why waste the lawyer's time?
